Quebec is one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada. It is Canada's largest province by area and its second-largest administrative division; only the territory of Nunavut is larger. It is historically and politically considered to be part of Central Canada (with Ontario). Quebec is the second-most populous province of Canada, after Ontario. It is the only one to have a predominantly French-speaking population, with French as the sole provincial official language.

Quebec City is the capital city of the Canadian province of Quebec. The city had a population estimate of 531,902 on July 2016, (an increase of 3.0% from 2011) and the metropolitan area had a population of 800,296 on July 2016, (an increase of 4.3% from 2011) making it Canada's seventh-largest metropolitan area and Quebec's second-largest city after Montreal.

The city's landmarks include the Château Frontenac, a hotel which dominates the skyline, and La Citadelle, an intact fortress that forms the centerpiece of the ramparts surrounding the old city. The National Assembly of Quebec (provincial legislature), the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec), and the Musée de la civilization (Museum of Civilization) are found within or near Vieux-Québec.

Montreal is the most populous municipality in the province of Quebec and the second-most populous in Canada. The city is on the Island of Montreal, which took its name from the same source as the city. It has a distinct four-season continental climate with warm to hot summers and cold snowy winters. In 2016 the city had a population of 1,704,694 and Montreal's metropolitan area had a population of 4,098,927.Historically the commercial capital of Canada, it was surpassed in population and economic strength by Toronto in the 1970s.

It remains an important center of commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, education, culture, tourism, gaming, film and world affairs. Being the location of the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization, Montreal is one of three North American cities home to organizations of the United Nations (along with Washington, D.C. and New York).

The 2017 edition of QS Best Student Cities ranked Montreal as the best city in the world to be a university student. According to the 2015 Global Liveability Ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Montreal ranked 14th out of 140 cities. Montreal has hosted multiple international conferences and events throughout its history, including the 1967 International and Universal Exposition and the 1976 Summer Olympic Games. It is the only Canadian city to have held the Summer Olympics. Currently, the city hosts the Canadian Grand Prix of Formula One, the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Just for Laughs festival.
